TOP 10 DOs and DON'Ts to avoid digital disruption

A lot of discussion has been evolving around digitalization for quite some time now. What is digitalization about and what should be done with it? With rapid changes across industries, what are the roles of CIOs or CMOs? Shortly after Easter, we gathered with Finnish top leaders to hear from and to discuss the above topics with a global futurist, strategist and a TED speaker Anders Sörman-Nilsson.

Gaining new insights

Our goal was to boldly take time off from our daily routines for fresh inspuration and new insights. And that is exactly what happened: during the two-hour discussion ideas were exchanged, new connections formed and best-practices thaught. One of our hightlights: over the short span of time, a sense of common understanding and genuine community emerged. All in all, a great event and the first step of many in the right direction.

TOP 10 DOs and DON'Ts to avoid digital disruption

In order to continue the journey, we compiled a list of TOP DOs and DON'Ts on how to prepare your organization for the digital disruption of tomorrow - utilize and refine the list the way that's the most suitable for you.

1. Set digitalization goals - don't forget the analogue world
Identify your competitive advantage and build on it. Think big and transform your dreams into concrete goals. Observe and learn from the analogue world – what is already working there and how could you make it work hand in hand with the digital world?

2. Create a road map; fail fast and adjust
Gather your key players for some undistracted time and define the win for the entire team. Next, prioritize actions. Be open to learning to live close to a chaos. Be ready for sudden changes and work your way through them.

3. Do inspire people
Employees' brains are your best tools and human mistakes are the best way to learn. Create a method of working in swarms, share information and get involved. Remember that 80% of effective learning happens informally.

4. Don't be limited by your current processes or thinking
Use your time to constantly search for new and more effective methods of working. Be brave in overriding the traditional non-effective ways of working. Where can you cut resources to a minimum, to make room for innovation?

5. Do not benchmark your own industry only
Learn from companies that have successfully braved disruption, even if they are not in your field. Think where you can create synergies among other service offerings in your organization. Focus on developing the digital skills of the whole organization.

6. Do the work
Divide the work into smaller steps and start from the beginning. Stop starting, start finishing. Remember: only practice can make you an expert.

7. Do everything to get rid of a structural secrecy
Imagine you have a magic wand at hand. You can do whatever you can think of. Now list the things that need to be done and start working on them.

8. Do influence, don't control
Over 80% of employees have a low or no emotional connection to their workplace and their daily work. This is a great leverage point to increase productivity and output. Delegate authority, not just tasks.

9. Release early, release often, and embrace feedback
Invite feedback often, and ask for it widely. Analyze the data you are receiving, think of a creative, on-the-spot fix. One example: give employees a pre-defined budget for fixing a customer problem on the spot.

10. Don't hold back, lead up
As a leader, the best thing you can bring to your team is your energy. Forget titles and roles; rather, reflect credit, embrace blame. Tell stories that inspire your team. And when you reach a set goal, take time to celebrate the win.
